From Darkness to Light: My Son’s Journey to Sobriety

Narconon Graduate with family

Addiction is a storm that shakes the foundations of a family. For three years, my son was caught in the grip of methamphetamine addiction, a struggle that strained relationships and tested our strength as a family. Yet, his story is not one of defeat but of resilience, determination, and transformation. Today, I want to share his incredible journey—from the chaos of addiction to the peace and success of sobriety—and the lessons we learned along the way.

In 2008, the first signs of my son’s addiction began to surface. Erratic behavior, irresponsibility, and loss of relationships marked the start of a downward spiral that led to job loss and strained family ties. The day his boss called me to pick him up from work was a turning point—it signaled the extent of his struggles and the beginning of years filled with heartbreak and distance.

During this time, our family faced another trial: his sister, my daughter, was diagnosed with cancer. They had always shared a close bond, and her illness weighed heavily on us all. While my focus shifted to caring for her, my son’s addiction deepened. It was a painful period of limited communication and tough love. We stopped enabling him, which I believe played a crucial role in his eventual decision to seek help.

In January 2011, while we were in Houston for my daughter’s treatment and surgery, my son called—a call I had been praying for. He said the words I had been longing to hear: “I’m ready to get help.” Without hesitation, we drove him to Narconon Arrowhead, a program that offered a nontraditional approach to recovery.

For the next 3–4 months, my son committed himself fully to the program. I visited him three times during his stay, and with each visit, I saw a transformation. His once restless and erratic demeanor had given way to calmness, focus, and determination. He found hope and tools to rebuild his life, and to this day, he credits the program’s structure for his long-term sobriety.

Since completing the program, my son has continued to thrive. He runs a company, managing a team of employees, and has built a stable and fulfilling life. He was able to reconnect with his sister and share precious moments with her until her passing. Today, he is happily remarried and a proud father of two daughters: his 18-year-old from his first marriage, a 12-year-old from his current marriage and a 17-year-old step-son. They are a constant reminder of the new life he has built and the relationships he has restored.

“My son’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of not giving up on those we love.”

My son’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of not giving up on those we love. It’s also a reminder that true recovery begins when someone is ready to embrace change. To families walking this difficult path, I encourage you to hold onto hope and trust that transformation is possible.
